Starting school is a huge milestone and can be an overwhelming life achievement, for both parents and child. Generally, entering a large school like ours can be intimidating for all; but here at Courtenay Gardens PS, we're here to help guide you through. The below listed dates will help prepare your child for school and it is highly recommended that you complete all tasks.

Kinder Transition Sessions
Your child is invited to attend four transition sessions to help prepare them for primary school. Each session will focus on a different area of the curriculum and give school staff an opportunity to get to know your child.
We strongly recommend your child attends all four sessions.

Transition session 1: Tuesday 13th October 9:15am – 10:30am.
Transition session 2: Tuesday 27th October 9:15am – 10:30am.
Transition session 3: Tuesday 10th November 9:15am – 10:30am.
Transition session 4: Tuesday 24th November 9:15am – 10:30am.

Prep Information Night Parents are encouraged to attend the 2027 Prep information night. Your chance to meet the 2027 Prep team and gain important information about preparing your child for Prep & their year ahead. |

In the school Performing Arts Centre (PAC).

'Step-Up' Orientation Morning (Statewide transition session - compulsory) Your child will meet their 2027 classroom teacher and other classmates in their designated classroom.
Whilst 'Step-Up' morning is happening, parents/carers are encouraged to stay onsite Stations will be set up around the PAC for parents to have the opportunity to ask any questions about:
School information packs will also be available to any parents/carers who missed out on receiving one at our school tours.
A coffee van will be onsite for parents/carers to be able to purchase & enjoy a Coffee. |
Tuesday 8th December 9:15am – 11:00am. Statewide transition day - Compulsory to attend.
Please line up with your child outside the school Performing Arts Centre (PAC) at 9.10am. School staff will be there to direct you and your child to their coloured group.
The prep teachers will take each class to their classrooms. You will collect your child from the PAC at 11:00am. Please ensure you tell the teacher you have taken your child.
Students will collect their ‘getting ready for school’ showbags from their classroom teachers. |

Prep early years Literacy and Numeracy assessment |
Friday 29th January to Thursday 4th February 2027. These 5 days are allocated for your child’s individual assessment with his/her teacher.
Parents will receive information on how to book your child in for their assessments on ‘Step Up’ transition morning, on Tuesday 8th December. |

First Day of School 2027 for Preps |
Friday 5th February 2027 Classroom doors open daily at 8:50am for students to put their bags away & get ready for the days learning. Classes start at 9:00am sharp. The school day finishes at 3.30pm. |
Preparing your child for school
Parents often ask the question: “What can we do to prepare our child for school?”
Here is a list of things that will help you to prepare them to be ready for school:
- Knows their preferred name.
- Be able to write their name.
- Dress themself, including doing up zippers and buttons, able to put on shoes and socks.
- Go to the toilet and wash their hands by themselves.
- Knows their own school bag - preferably with a personalised bag tag.
- Can pack and unpack their bag, knowing where everything is.
- Knows their own clothes and other items, which are clearly labelled.
- Be able to open lunch box and drink bottle.
- Looks after belongings. Respects other people's belongings.
- Be able to tidy up after themselves.
Take the time to talk to your child about school, what it would be like, your positive experiences with school. Talk to your child about our 5 key values of Safety, Trust, Acceptance, Respect & Success and how to show these values at school.
